Make this cute cloud mobile using air-dry clay and these simple instructions!
When one of my besties had a baby, I knew I wanted to make him a little something, and as a part of that, I thought I’d make him a cloud mobile. I’ve seen a fair few nursery mobiles on Pinterest - all different sizes, shapes, colours and complexities but being the minimalist I am, I wanted to keep mine pretty simple, and for it to co-ordinate with the colours of his nursery. Although the nursery isn’t yet finished, I was given a sneak peak of the colours my friends were using, which was really helpful when making this. This is definitely more of a decorative piece for him room rather than a mobile for over his cot, so although I wasn’t too concerned he’d get his little hands on it, I made sure to stick to water-based paints and mod podge, all of which are relatively odourless and toxic free. Keep reading to find out what I used and for the step by step tutorial…
1.
First of all, create a template on paper for your cloud and a rain drop. Make this the size you want your clay pieces to be and cut them out.
2.
Cut off some clay, roll this out to your desired thickness and place the cloud template on top. Cut around the template and remove the excess clay.
3.
Next, place the rain drop template onto the excess clay pieces and cut around this. Repeat this as many times as you’d like.
4.
Use your finger to smooth the edges of the cut out clay pieces and then use a pen or clay tool to add a hole in the top centre of the cloud and holes at the bottom to hang the rain drops from. Add two holes for eyes on the cloud and add a smile underneath.
5.
Leave these to dry and then use a piece of sandpaper or a nail file to smooth the edges and remove any sharpness to the edges.
6.
Once you’re happy with it’s shape, paint your cloud and rain drops in your desired colours. I painted mine white and then add a dark blue paint to the edges. When this had dried, I protected my paintwork with a layer of mod podge.
7.
Finally, use some thread to hang your rain drops from the cloud and use some ribbon to add to the top of the cloud to hang the mobile from.
