Fill your home with autumnal scents using these easy DIY scented clay leaf ornaments!
Autumn is all about feeling cosy, and one of the most effective ways I find to make myself feel just about anything is through aromas. I have some lovely de-stressing bath oils which I swear by but when it comes to creating that warm and cosy feeling I love cinnamon and mace. I don’t have any autumn essential oils and used what I had available to me, however if you do, you could skip steps 5 to 7 below and just dab some of your oil onto the back of the air-dry clay. If like me you don’t, then you can get creative with spices! I really liked the texture created by mixing the spices into the paint, though the whole project turned out a little more rustic than I imagined, and it smells incredible. Keep reading to find out how I made it and what I used…
1.
Roll out some clay to your desired thickness and to a size that is larger than your leaf.
2.
Place your leaf on top of the clay and roll over this until the clay has an imprint of the leaf in it.
3.
Using a craft knife, cut around the imprint of the leaf and remove the excess clay.
4.
Smooth the edges and use a straw to create a hole at the base of the leaf.
5.
Once the clay is dry, mix your autumn spices into your acrylic paint.
6.
Paint your textured paint all over your leaf. If you want to add some more colour and texture, pat some spice mixture onto the wet paint.
7.
Once the paint is dry, remove any excess spices from the top with a brush and tie a ribbon through the hole to hang it.
